Alzheimer’s disease hints help info

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Dementia is now a major problem amongst retired people especially the type known as Alzheimer’s disease; currently the most common form of dementia among older people. Alzheimer’s disease primarily affects the memory centers of their brain with ten percent of over 65 year olds affected; the diagnosis of the disorder has managed to reach an accuracy of up to ninety four percent. Alois Alzheimer a German physician first discovered the disease back in 1906 but it has only really been in the world’s focus for just over 30 years; even though it has been scientifically studied for many years, knowledge surrounding this disease is minimal.

Studies show that your greatest risk of acquiring Alzheimer’s is advancing age. Many people experiencing the first signs of Alzheimer’s are unwilling to admit to themselves or others that there is anything wrong.

Alzheimer’s disease is currently treated exactly the same as other forms of dementia. Some drugs can now slow down and sometimes improve the symptoms but so far no treatment has been discovered that can cure the disorder. At the moment, three drugs are used routinely to treat sufferers all of which have been approved by the FDA, Donepezil, Tacrine, and Rivastigmine. They can improve the cognitive skills of Alzheimer’s disease sufferers by up to six months.

A new drug, Memantine is helping to slow down the deterioration process during the later stages and is a derivative of the well known anti-influenza drug Amantadine. Patients with mild to severe Alzheimer’s who are already receiving Donepezil are now given Memantine as an alternative. The side effects of using Memantine are low, and it’s the first drug shown to have an effect on the symptoms of moderate to severe cases. More than 80 percent of the Memantine excreted are unchanged by the kidneys.

As the fourth largest cause of death in America, Alzheimer’s disease is thought to be one of the largest public health problems. This is due to an increase in the life expectancy of the populations in the industrialized world. There is also an economic aspect to consider, with an annual cost of 40 billion US dollars for care and treatment. Last year alone, the National Institute on Aging spent nearly one-half of its budget on research related to this insidious disease. Over 300 different compounds are already at various stages of development for its treatment.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is one proven method you can use to reduce the risks of contracting dementia. Studies have also indicated that a number of Alzheimer’s patients have reduced their rate of decline by staying healthy and happy. Fortunately this disease is still mainly affecting elderly people but there have been recent occasions where younger persons have developed this disease.

We have noticed when working at nursing centres such as Tarry Brae at Brookfield QLD Australia and the like that. On the bright side most of the people we have worked with that have Alzheimer’s disease always enjoy as with you and I a good laugh. These people with Alzheimer’s disease also usually have a good attitude due to the fact they cannot remember so they do not stress out as much.

Asthma advice & hints for asthmatics

Asthma is one of the most important as worldwide health issues go; year on year, the figure for those contracting the condition rises. Although it is treatable, asthma is still a chronic condition which affects the function of breathing of every person who is affected by it. This is a respiratory condition that when not treated properly can easily result in death, if the attack is not attended to in time or is severe.

Assessing and monitoring the condition is the first important step towards treating the condition for any asthma sufferer. Once the severity of the condition is know there are three main ways to treat it; carrying out preventative measures, treating small attacks and dealing with serious life threatening attacks.

Whilst all sufferers will be given some form of Bronchodilator to help with short term relief for attacks, patients who only have a mild form will probably never need to use anything else. Other medication is available for asthma patients who have mild but frequent attacks like a mastcell stabilizer or leukotriene modifier and oral glucocorticoids for patients with a serious asthma condition. They will all still use a standard reliever as well.

The asthmatics themselves must also recognize just what situations or conditions trigger their attacks then they will be able to avoid those situations. Medical science has now confirmed that the poorer the air quality the greater the chance that this and other respiratory problems will occur.

Although the specific medications can help the situation it is far better if they can be avoided where possible. They can cause serious side effects if used on a regular basis such as impotence, liver damage, depression, even tiredness and dizzy spells. Pharmaceutical drugs are formulated to make the body’s own immune system to take over but more people are now using natural medicines which are treating the cause of the respiratory condition instead.

Every attack causes the body to become weak due to the stress placed upon it, so the drugs used have a catalyst to help calm the body down and make it stronger. However, the natural medications that are used contain natural catalysts which do not cause any side-effects and help restore the body’s equilibrium.

Other asthma sufferers are finding that breathing techniques taught by certain yoga disciples can also help their situation and promote good health. A good nutritional diet will help boost the immune system and natural therapies will not leave large amounts of drugs in your system. The main focus however, should be on the asthma patient learning to control their own condition.

Effective back pain relief info

There is generally no respite from back pain, once you have an injury in this area; a one hundred percent effective back pain relief cure has yet to be found but that does not mean that some easing of the discomfort cannot be found. Although some medication may be effective and bring pain relief, it doesn’t really help with the underlying problem of the condition causing the distress.

Any type of medication should only be used with the supervision of a doctor but especially when it is taken on a regular basis. The reason back problems are so common is because it is so easy to injure the spine, large numbers of people have caused permanent damage to their backs just by sitting poorly for long periods.

Most spinal problems are a result of lifting heavy weights but they can also be caused by lifting even light weights incorrectly, the pain is usually experienced in the lower back. Fortunately there area number of natural back pain relief remedies that can help without a reliance on prescription medication. One of the simplest but also underused remedies is just the act of stretching which can bring relief to tense muscles as well.

Another type of treatment uses reflexology to massage the feet. It is a very old natural therapy which helps to relieve many chronic ailments. Another benefit to reflexology is how it can improve the circulation which helps to ease tense muscles.

The traditional Chinese medicine therapy acupuncture is now providing back pain relief with people suffering spinal problems in the West. Acupuncture works by releasing the ‘chi’ or energy flow that every living thing has. It can become clogged up when sickness is present; using thin needles placed into the body at specific points can free this energy. Like reflexology, acupuncture seems to be used by people who suffer with chronic conditions like back pain which requires relief.

Tai Chi is also another ancient Chinese discipline which is basically a type of exercise similar to yoga except it is slower. It focuses on breath control and is very relaxing owing to its gentle nature. It is possible for anyone to participate irrespective of age.

To finish, it is a good idea not to forget the huge benefits that exercise can provide for back pain relief, including those of prevention.

New kind of Breast Cancer - Cancer of the Nipple

Please read this carefully. We need to become informed!

Please forward to all of the women in your lives . Mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, friends, etc. In November, a rare kind of breast cancer was found. A lady developed a rash on her breast, similar to that of young mothers who are nursing.

Because her mammogram had been clear, the doctor treated her with antibiotics for infections. After 2 rounds, it continued to get worse, so her doctor sent her for another mammogram. This time it showed a mass.

A biopsy found a fast growing malignancy. Chemo was started in order to shrink the growth; then a mastectomy was performed; then a full round of Chemo; then radiation. After about 9 months of intense treatment, she was given a clean bill of health.

She had one year of living each day to its fullest. Then the cancer returned to the liver area. She took 4 treatments and decided that she wanted quality of life, not the after effects of Chemo. She had 5 great months and she planned each detail of the final days. After a few days of needing morphine, she died. She left this message to be delivered to women everywhere:

Women, PLEASE be alert to anything that is not normal, and be persistent in getting help as soon as possible.
Paget’s Disease: This is a rare form of breast cancer, and is on the outside of the breast, on the nipple and aureole It appeared as a rash, which later became a lesion with a crusty outer edge. I would not have ever suspected it to be breast cancer but it was. My nipple never seemed any different to me, but the rash bothered me, so I went to the doctor for that. Sometimes, it itched and was sore, but other than that it didn’t bother me. It was just ugly and a nuisance, and could not be cleared up with all the creams prescribed by my doctor and dermatologist for the dermatitis on my eyes just prior to this outbreak. They seemed a little concerned but did not warn me it could be cancerous.

Now, I suspect not many women out there know a lesion or rash on the nipple or aureole can be breast cancer. (Mine started out as a single red pimple on the aureole. One of the biggest problems with Paget’s disease of the nipple is that the symptoms appear to be harmless. It is frequently thought to be a skin inflammation or infection, leading to unfortunate delays in detection and care.)

What are the symptoms?

1. A persistent redness, oozing, and crusting of your nipple causing it to itch and burn (As I stated, mine did not itch or burn much, and had no oozing I was aware of, but it did have a crust along the outer edge on one side.)

2. A sore on your nipple that will not heal. (Mine was on the aureole are a with a whitish thick looking area in center of nipple).

3. Usually only one nipple is effected. How is it diagnosed? Your doctor will do a physical exam and should suggest having a mammogram of both breasts, done immediately. Even though the redness, oozing and crusting closely resemble dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), your doctor should suspect cancer if the sore is only on one breast. Your doctor should order a biopsy of your sore to confirm what is going on.

This message should be taken seriously and passed on to as many of your relatives and friends as possible; it could save someone’s life.

My breast cancer has spread and metastasized to my bones after receiving mega doses of chemotherapy, 28 treatments of radiation and taking Tamaxofin. If this had been diagnosed as breast cancer in the beginning, perhaps it would not have spread…

TO ALL READERS:

This is sad as women are not aware of Paget’s disease. If, by passing this around on the e-mail, we can make others aware of it and its potential danger, we are helping women everywhere.

Please, if you can, take a moment to forward this message to as many people as possible, especially to your family and friends. It only takes a moment, yet the results could save a life.
