The “Scarsdale Diet,” a low-carbohydrate, low-calorie weight-loss diet, is still popular today. In 2005, the American-based Food Network listed the Scarsdale diet as number two of its top five food fads of the 1970s. Be advised that any listing of “The Scarsdale Diet” which includes appetite suppressants and diet pills are innacurate, as they are not part of this program.

Quite possibly the first of the modern era of low carbohydrate / high protein diets, the Scarsdale Diet was first published in 1978 after having been developed, tested and refined on hundreds of patients at his Scarsdale Medical Center over the 19 years prior to publication. In comparison to the Atkins Diet, the Scarsdale Diet has a larger range and quantity of fruits and vegetables allowed, and is still concerned with minimising unnecessary fats in the diet. The Scarsdale Diet also prescribes what it calls a “two weeks on, two weeks off” regime. In 2005, the American-based Food Network listed the Scarsdale diet as number two of its top five food fads of the 1970s.

The Scarsdale Medical Diet demands strict obedience for two weeks and promises an average 7 to 15 pounds (3 to 7 kilos) weight loss during that period. The Scarsdale Diet does not specify the size of portions, so a hungry person could conceivably consume up to 1,600 calories per day and fail to lose much weight. THE SCARSDALE MEDICAL 14-DAY DIET Where no portion is indicated, you can eat as much as you like. Tarnower had been prescribing a two-week crash diet for his patients for many years before collaborating with veteran diet writer Samm Sinclair Baker on The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet (1978), which became an immediate best-seller.

Pro: If it’s Tuesday, successive waves of Scarsdale dieters learned to anticipate, it must be fruit salad; on Friday, it’s spinach. The Scarsdale “Medical” Diet dates back some 30 years or more and was one of the first Doctor’s Diets to achieve national prominence. Compared to the standard American diet (protein 10%, fat 45%, and carbohydrate 45%), the Scarsdale Diet represents a radical change of eating habits for the average person.

Herman Tarnower’s The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet includes two-week menu plans for various special circumstances, including gourmet, vegetarian, and international (ethnic) cooking. Once the Scarsdale Diet has done its magic and you have reached your goal weight, your primary concern is to weigh daily and to return to the SMD immediately if there is a gain of more than 4 pounds (2kilos) over your target weight.
